Craigslist Used Car VIN Scam

When you buy a used car from a private party you need to check the vin or vehicle identification number in the drivers windshield.

Then run a carfax.com search to see if it has a clean title and clean history.

Here’s what scammers are doing:

1. They take a vin based on the same make, model and year and clone the vin tag
2. Then they put the clone vin on the stolen used car they are selling too you
3. You do a carfax.com check and the used car title comes back clean
4. You pay the seller cash for the car
5. Your send in the registration for title and get tags.
6. You get auto insurance on your used car.

Now your driving the car and the police discover your car has been stolen and they take your car away from you.

Here’s a real story that happened to a buyer who paid $6,000 cash for a used car on craigslist and was a victim of VIN Scam.

Secret Tip:  Most newer model cars have the VIN on each door panel, under the hood, under the rear trunk. So you need to write down the VIN on the drivers windshield and then compare it to the VIN on each body part of the car.
