Fake Check Car Theft Scam

In Linconln, Nebraska police said a man wrote a fake check in a car theft scam to steal a 1998 Chevy Suburban.

The victim placed an ad in the paper like millions of other car owners.   A man shows up with a fake name then test drove the suburban.

He tells the owner he definately wants to buy the car 2  days later.

When he came back to buy the car he wrote a check for $4,200 and took the suburban.

The victim took the check to her bank to cash it and was told it was a fake check and the bank did not exist.

Lesson to be learned is to never accept a check when selling a car.  It’s best to get a certified check with a bank you recoginize.

Most certified checks have 2 copies; the check and carbon copy.

However, the best advice is to accept cash.  Cash is King!
